A Season of Gratitude and Reflection

November 21, 2025

Dear Members of the Stony Brook Community,

As the fall semester draws to a close, my first as your president, we enter a very special season of gratitude that invites us to pause, reflect and give thanks. I’m deeply grateful for the people of Stony Brook and the shared sense of purpose that drives our excellence and impact. I recently surpassed my 100th day as Stony Brook’s seventh president, and these days have included some of the most joyful, exhilarating and gratifying moments in my entire career. It is an honor to be leading a community that fosters such an inclusive and caring environment where we can push the limits of what's possible and have pride in doing it together.

I have thoroughly enjoyed participating in some of the cherished traditions that mark the beginning of this joyful season. One magical moment was Light the Brook where, together with student leaders and Wolfie, we illuminated our Academic Mall with glowing and inspiring lights. I was elated to see the Mall teeming with Seawolves, many decked out in lighted garlands, to enjoy talented student performances, savor some delicious treats and come together in this special ceremony symbolizing our warm community and bright future ahead.

Earlier this month, I had the privilege of attending my first Interfaith Thanksgiving Dinner, one of our young university’s oldest traditions. The broad participation in the dinner by students, faculty and staff from many faiths drove home how our community is so embracing of diversity and inclusion because it is foundational to our culture. These special traditions and the many other ones I have experienced highlight our Seawolf strength and the power of connection, reminding us that together we can reach our boldest aspirations for excellence and impact individually and collectively.

I am continually inspired by the contributions you all make every day to our university’s outstanding research, education and medical care while strengthening the bonds of our community and the promise of our shared future. Be assured that these contributions are valued and important. I encourage all of you to take time to relax and recharge during the winter holiday season so as to start the new year with energy and optimism. To our essential personnel who will be taking care of our university and our medical professionals caring for patients during the break, thank you for your dedication and support that benefits our entire community.

I look forward to concluding the semester with a shared sense of accomplishment coupled with anticipation for the year ahead. May these final weeks bring you success and fulfillment, whether you are studying for final exams, pursuing a transformative research result or working to meet year-end deadlines. Together, we are building a remarkable future for this special university. Thank you for being part of our exciting journey ahead.

Sincerely,
Andrea Goldsmith
President
