Going Boldly into the Fall 2023 Semester

August 28, 2023

“To boldly go where no one has gone before.”

Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Star Trek: Next Generation

I know. It’s strange to start a message that way. And, yes, I am a Trekkie. I promise not to make anymore references. But what’s more important is that those words ring true as Stony Brook ventures into new territory this semester, a semester that I believe will be our best yet.

As you’ve undoubtedly noticed, we’re all full of Seawolf pride. We’re New York’s flagship, #1 public institution. Our new flags proudly display our historic landmark achievement, serving as the anchor institution for The New York Climate Exchange: a groundbreaking climate solutions center on Governors Island. We received the largest unrestricted donation to an institution of higher education in U.S. history from the Simons Foundation. And, our inaugural Simons STEM Scholars–students, whose academic prowess is among the highest in the nation, finally arrived.

So, what does that mean for us? Everything. Here, at the Division of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) we have also boldly ventured into unchartered territory. With your safety at the forefront—by way of the University Police Department (UPD), Environmental & Health Services, revamped Fire & Emergency Services, Risk Management, Mobility & Parking Services, Technology & Research Development, and Policy & Compliance departments—ERM is more committed than ever to being your metaphorical shield.

Your safety is our priority. Familiarize yourself with our officers, attend fire safety demonstrations, take advantage of the transit services, and register for one of our various training programs to learn life-saving tips from our Community Relations Team. So, get involved. We’re out there and we can’t wait to meet you.Simply put, whether it’s your first time on campus or you’ve already made Stony Brook your home, walk boldly and safely with us as we trek into the Fall 2023 semester!

Welcome back, Seawolves.
