Tenacious overseas reporting is rewarded with a journalist-in-residence fellowship, bringing foreign correspondents to Stony Brook.
Lindsey Hilsum, an acclaimed foreign correspondent from Great Britain, was selected as the School’s first journalist-in-residence for the Fall 2016 semester. She will lecture, mentor students, meet with faculty, and advance the goals of the Marie Colvin Center.
Lindsey is the International Editor of Channel 4 News in London. In 2015, she reported on the refugee and migrant crisis from both Syria and Europe. Previously, she covered the conflict in Ukraine and the Arab Spring. In 1994, she was the only English-speaking journalist in Rwanda when the genocide began and in 1999 she reported from Belgrade on the NATO bombing of Serbia. She also reported from Baghdad during the US invasion and was the Channel 4 News China Correspondent. She is the author of the book, Sandstorm: Libya in the Time of Revolution.
Lindsey also had a long personal and professional connection with Marie Colvin. For decades, they worked together covering wars and conflicts, often putting their lives at risk. They had dinner together in Beirut just three days before Marie was killed. In addition to her other activities on campus, Lindsey will work on a biography of Marie. She will be in residence from late August 2016 until December 2016.
