Career Communities

Become a Member of  One (or more!) of our Career Communities

Career Communities are groups of individuals who share similar interests, goals, experiences, and knowledge. Our eight Career Communities focus on specific interests and industry sectors rather than academic majors. To learn more about the different Career Communities, click on the icons below.

You can choose a Career Community that isn't directly related to your major—it's perfectly fine! There are no mandatory meetings or extra steps required. Being part of a Career Community simply keeps you informed about all relevant happenings in your community.

Why Join a Career Community?

Joining a Career Community offers tailored resources and industry-specific opportunities to help you navigate your career path.

 Some of the benefits are:

  • Schedule Personalized Career Coaching Sessions: Access career coaching through pre-scheduled appointments with Career Coaches who specialize in those specific areas.
  • Receive Communications about Curated Opportunities: Receive bi-weekly emails featuring handpicked jobs, internships, and events that align with your career interests.
  • Stay Informed about Networking Opportunities: Connect with employers, alumni, and fellow students who share your interests, expanding your professional network.

How Can I Join a Career Community?

Joining a Career Community is easy and just a few clicks away! Simply update your profile in Handshake and select the Career Communities you wish to join. While you can join multiple communities, we recommend limiting your selection to two or three (at most) for the best experience.

Follow these Steps to Join a Career Community

  1. Log in to Handshake: Use your Stony Brook Net ID and password to log in.
  2. Update Your Career Interests: Click on your initials or profile picture in the top right-hand corner, then select ‘Career Interests’ from the drop-down menu.
  3. Share Your Preferences: Provide information about your career interests to receive tailored recommendations for events, career tools, and job opportunities.
  4. Save Your Preferences: Click ‘save career interests’ to complete the process.
