The Office of Proposal Development (OPD) promotes the advancement of university initiatives by supporting the development and preparation of highly competitive grant proposals. OPD is committed to providing Stony Brook's research community with a comprehensive suite of services to foster the development and growth of research activities. In addition to proposal management, our support services include identifying extramural funding opportunities, coordinating limited submission competitions, nurturing research collaborations, and connecting researchers to institutional resources. We also organize workshops and trainings in grantsmanship, coordinate external copy editing and graphic design services, serve as project managers for the proposal development process, handle the administrative requirements and manage a repository of sample grant proposal materials. Our team’s forward-thinking approach to research development provides faculty with tactical support for large-scale proposals, ensuring that they are aligned with sponsor funding priorities.

SUNY Technology Accelerator Fund (TAF)
Description
: The SUNY Technology Accelerator Fund (TAF) provides critical investments to advance SUNY innovation from the lab to the marketplace. TAF investments are highly competitive and support technology development milestones, such as feasibility studies, prototyping, and clinical and field testing, to demonstrate that an innovation has commercial potential.
Eligibility: Faculty, staff, and students from all disciplines and campuses across SUNY are encouraged to submit proposals for TAF Class of 2025 funding.
Topic Areas and Funding Tracks (Expanded for 2025):

Funding Track 1 – Open TAF
Open TAF, the traditional program format that has operated since 2011, is accessible to any high-potential SUNY technology that uniquely addresses an acute problem within a supportive market. SUNY intends to fund up to seven (7) projects for up to $50,000 each via Open TAF.

Funding Track 2 – Mission TAF
Mission TAF is a defense-focused technology proof-of-concept fund that aims to revolutionize the defense industrial base by fast-tracking cutting-edge innovations in: 1) Quantum Sciences; 2) Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Autonomy; 3) Integrated Network Systems-of-Systems; and 4) Integrated Sensing and Cyber.
Technologies and innovators funded through Mission TAF will receive additional support from the Griffiss Institute, a nonprofit talent and technology accelerator for the U.S. Department of Defense. SUNY and the Griffiss Institute intend to fund up to four (4) projects for up to $50,000 each via Mission TAF.

Deadline: The deadline for submitting eligible Pre-Proposals is April 30, 2025.
Additional Information: All individuals intending to participate in Open TAF or Mission TAF are strongly encouraged to contact their respective campus TTOs immediately to formally express their interest, ensure compliance with all campus specific TAF proposal submission requirements, and clarify any questions related to the invention status of their technology. For more information about this year’s eligibility requirements and the application process, please refer to the TAF Class of 2025 Solicitation and Administrative Guidelines.

REACH Funding Opportunity to Support Development of Biomedical Breakthroughs
Description
: The development of promising innovations often stalls due to limited early-stage funding to address translational uncertainties. The Center for Biotechnology's Research Evaluation and Commercialization Hub (REACH) award program bridges the translation gap between biomedical discovery and their development toward commercial goals. Program funding is intended to determine feasibility, develop proof-of-concept, and ultimately lead to follow-on funding, a strategic partnership, or company formation.
Award: REACH offers two funding pathways for faculty and postdoctoral researchers: Feasibility Awards ($50K, 12 months) support early-stage translational research, and Proof of Concept Awards ($100K, 12 months) to advance existing intellectual property with clinical applications.

Deadline: May 15, 2025
