The Office for Research and Innovation invites applications to the The G. Harold & Leila Y. Mathers Foundation Grants program. The Mathers Foundation supports pivotal scientific research that advances knowledge, enhances human health, and fosters innovation. They empower researchers whose work holds the greatest promise for advancing mankind and medicine, driving meaningful, long-term contributions to science and society. Stony Brook University can submit THREE LOI applications.
Please see below for details. If you are interested in applying, you must submit a pre-application via the Mathers Portal in InfoReady by Tuesday, September 2, 2025 at 9:00 am. Pre-applications for internal review and selection must be uploaded to the portal as a single PDF document.
WHAT DOES IT FUND:The Foundation primarily supports basic research with translational potential in areas such as immunology, microbiome, structural biology, cancer, genetics, stem cells, and neuroscience. They fund work that can lead to major advances in scientific understanding and human health.
APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS: No restrictions
AWARD: The total project budget cannot exceed $600,000-700,000, inclusive of 10% indirect costs, over three years.
SPONSOR DEADLINE: Institutional Nominations and Portal Registrations due September 19, 2025; LOIs due October 3, 2025; Invited proposals due December 12, 2025
A complete pre-application should comprise of the following:
- A brief summary of the research project (no more then one page)
- CV/NIH biosketch with support information for the Primary Investigator
