Leadership Transition for the College of Business

December 23, 2025

Dear Stony Brook Community,

I am writing to share an update on leadership of the College of Business. Before the start of the spring semester, Haresh Gurnani will step down as dean and will join the faculty of the College. His last day as dean will be January 16, 2026.

Since joining Stony Brook as dean in the fall of 2023, Dean Gurnani has effectively led the College of Business in its next phase of growth following initial accreditation by the AACSB. Accomplishments from his tenure include the redesign of existing and development of new academic programs, several with STEM focus; new AI initiatives at the undergraduate and graduate levels; significant improvement in program rankings; strong enrollment growth; the revision of promotion and tenure criteria to align with aspirational business school peers; recruitment of several top-tier faculty; and substantial philanthropic gifts to the College. He is a leading academic in the fields of marketing and supply chain analytics, and this transition will allow him to focus more time on his research and teaching in these domains.

In the meantime, we will begin the process to search for an interim dean to lead the College over the coming months. I invite you to share your suggestions for interim dean candidates in this brief anonymous survey. Your suggestions are requested by January 5.

Share your Suggestions

I will follow up with an additional communication by mid-January to share plans for the interim dean appointment.

Sincerely,

Carl
