Diversity Festival

The Diversity Festival at Stony Brook University (SBU) is our premier cultural celebration, uniting students, staff, and community members for an evening of unity and intercultural exchange. This year’s festival will take place on Thursday, February 26, 2026, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM in the Student Activities Center, Ballroom A. All interested students, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend. 

The Diversity Festival features a Cultural Showcase which will highlight inspiring performances by Stony Brook's cultural student groups. Cultural and ethnic-interest student clubs and organizations will have information tables and activity stations for participants to visit.  Departments are also welcome to host activity tables and perform in the cultural showcase.

Diversity Festival is co-sponsored by the Diversity, Intercultural and Community Engagement (Office of Student Life), Student Enagagement and Activities, and the Undergraduate Student Government.

About Diversity Festival

The Diversity Festival, once known as Diversity Day, is an annual tradition that brings individuals of different backgrounds together for a day of celebration and togetherness. Every Spring semester during Stony Brook University's  Diversity Festival we share the many dimensions of our heritages and lifestyles through education, food, music, dance performances, creative arts, and cultural trivia. Diversity Festival is a mosaic of all of the aspects of our lives that make us unique and unite us as people!

Diversity Day: A Rich Stony Brook Tradition that Celebrates Diversity
In 1998, the President’s Student Advisory Council on Diversity conceived of having a Diversity Day at Stony Brook University as a way "to create awareness about what diversity is and dispel related misconceptions, help students break down barriers and work together for a common cause, and promote unity and encourage student interaction." (Council Retreat Resolution, 1998).  The first Diversity Day was part of the University's 40th anniversary celebration, where there was a week-long series of programming and each day had a particular theme. The last day of the week (Friday, April 24, 1998) was designated as "Diversity Day." The Council organized the event with support from the then Office of Diversity and Affirmative Action. The students developed the theme and coordinated related projects to help the campus community appreciate its diversity. Roy Flores, a student leader who was instrumental in organizing Diversity Day, was one of the founders of Diversity Day. A devout Seawolf, Roy served on the Council throughout his undergraduate years and contributed greatly to the success of this Stony Brook tradition.

Back then, Diversity Day included information tables, demonstrations, and cultural entertainment. Since 2007, the Office of Diversity, Intercultural and Community Engagement (formerly the Office of Multicultural Affairs) has worked collaboratively with Stony Brook's many cultural students clubs and organizations to present the annual Diversity Day Cultural Showcase that features main stage performances for all members of our campus community to enjoy.
