For your Creative Writing supplement (uploaded to SB application)
  • The Common or SUNY app
  • Statement of purpose
  • High school transcript(s)
  • Writing sample
  • SAT or ACT scores
  • Letter of recommendation

  • High School Students

In the portal, upload your statement of purpose and writing sample (combined in one PDF) under “CW Supplemental.” You’ll also be asked to enter the name of one recommender-choose the person most familiar with your writing.

  • Current SBU Students

Apply with the Creative Writing supplement, an application form, and one letter of recommendation. Email your materials by November 1 (spring admission) or May 1 (fall admission). Combine your application form, statement of purpose, and writing sample into a single PDF, named with your last name + CWApp (e.g., SheehanCWApp). Send it as an attachment with the subject line “Creative Writing Application” to creativewriting_bfa@stonybrook.edu.

Ask your recommender to email their letter to the same address.

  • *Honors College + University Scholars*

While you're in the zone, and if you are the rock star we suspect you are, we highly recommend you apply to the Honors College and/or the University Scholars program, both of which are eminently compatible with our curriculum.

Honors students write a thesis- so do Creative Writing BFAs. University Scholars (invited to apply based on GPA and SAT scores, with an optional supplementary essay for priority consideration) take EXP+ courses- so do Creative Writing BFAs. Deadlines for both programs align with the university’s general admissions.
