Newly Admitted Students: Next Steps

Welcome to the incoming EOP/AIM class at Stony Brook University, where you will join a select group of students as bright and promising as you. This wonderful achievement is just the first of many you will enjoy when you become part of our great community.  Now, take the first steps to reserve your place in our incoming EOP/AIM class:

1. Check your Personal & SBU Email, SOLAR and your StartSBU portal OFTEN

Over the next few weeks there will be a lot of information shared through your SOLAR portal and StartSBU portal. Please make sure to check that at least once a day! You will also begin receiving emails from your EOP assigned counselor. Be sure to always respond to them as we will need some information from you moving forward.

2. EOP First-Year Matriculated Student Questionnaire

This form is required in order to be registered to attend EOP Orientation, meet with your EOP Counselor, and be advised in order to register for classes. If you have not already done so, it is very important you complete this form in your StartSBU portal

3. Campus Housing

Incoming first-year students in EOP who accept their spot in SOLAR under For New Students by May 1 are prioritized for on-campus housing. After securing your spot, please complete the housing application by the posted deadlines on the New Student Housing Application webpage

To request housing, you will need to do the following:

  • Accept your spot in SOLAR NO LATER than May 1 as well as fill out the Campus Residences Information Acknowledgement and Housing Plans Form in your StartSBU Portal
  • You must then complete the “On Campus Housing Intent” steps in the Housing Portal due by May 5 at 12 pm. Campus Residences will email you from reside@stonybrook.edu when the housing application is live in April, the Monday after you accept your spot in SOLAR, with the subject link “SBU New Student Housing Needs”
  • Submit the housing application in the Housing Portal* (StarRez) by the deadline listed on the Fall Admit Housing Application Information webpage.
  • Continue to check your email, StartSBU portal and Housing Portal throughout the process for important steps

*Admitted students in EOP who secured their spot should receive their NetID through email notification in April. After enrolling post April, it can take 3 business days to receive a NetID. A NetID is needed to log in to the Housing Portal, known as StarRez.

Please note that on-campus housing is required during the Summer Academy, but the process above is also required for Fall Housing specifically. If you do not complete the process above by the deadline, you will not be able to live on campus in August.

4. Health Forms/Immunizations

You will need your SBU NetID and SBU email to move forward, and they are emailed to you within 3-5 days (beginning in April) after you accepted your EOP/AIM Offer. To access health care services and register for classes, its essential to have a completed health form on record. Additionally, you must meet state requirements by providing proof of vaccination against measles, mumps, and rubella. Without a completed health form, finalizing your fall 2025 class registration is not possible. Therefore, its crucial to complete and submit these forms through the Health Portal as soon as possible.

Keep in mind that scheduling appointments with doctors can take several weeks during this time of year, so we recommend calling without delay. Access the health forms through your StartSBU portal.

5. Stony Brook University Placement Exams

To ensure timely registration for classes, you must complete one or more online placement exams, including the In-Person Mathematics Assessment and Writing Placement Exam.

IN-PERSON Proctored Math Placement
Every student must demonstrate a certain level of mathematics proficiency to graduate from Stony Brook University. The Math Placement Assessment was developed to help advisors and students determine the appropriate initial math course that is best suited for an incoming student.

You can schedule your In-person Math Placement Exam through your StartSBU portal and it will be hosted in the city or at SBU. Your Math Placement should be completed ASAP to be placed for your summer and fall classes. Taking the assessment honestly and seriously is imperative as it determines your appropriate class placement.

Writing Placement
Students who are required to complete the Writing Placement receive an email notification and will see it in their StartSBU portal.

New first-year students who have not been placed into WRT 102 through one of the established mechanisms or satisfied the SBU writing requirement (WRT 102) by transfer credit will take an online writing placement exam.

This 30-60 minute online writing exam can be completed directly in your StartSBU Portal.

EOP/AIM Pre-Freshman Summer Academy

staffThis four week summer program of intense academics is an integral part of the EOP/AIM program at Stony Brook. All EOP/AIM students are expected to earn a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 during the summer program. The program provides a richly rewarding academic experience for participants. The courses of study are Mathematics,  Sciences and Writing.

Some students enter the summer program with apprehension, perhaps because they would prefer to stay home and work. However, most students look back over the five weeks and realize the enormous academic and social benefits they received from the summer program experience. These benefits carry over into the academic year. Our research shows that summer program participants tend to perform better than non-participants.

2025 Mandatory in-person orientation DATE June 5, 2025

***All information about the EOP Summer Academy will be discussed at Orientation and selection of a Summer Academy move-in time will be sent in an email from EOP.

The 2025 Summer Academy

VIRTUAL MEETING ON JULY 3rd (More information will be shared)

summer academy on campus dates: July 5-August 2, 2025

 Welcome week:  August 19-August 23, 2025

Any mail sent to students should be directed to:  Student's Full Name, Lauterbur Hall,  Room #, 300 Circle Road, Stony Brook, New York 11794-3402

Program Staff

The program staff throughout the academic year consists of one director, seven counselors/academic advisors, and one office manager.  In addition to the regular staff, summer program staff includes student residential peer advisors, teaching assistants and adjunct instructors.

Summer Program Cost

The program is free of charge to participants, and includes housing, food, and books.

Mandatory Meetings

All summer program participants are assigned a counselor, who meets with them during the summer. These meetings provide an opportunity for students and counselors to become better acquainted and to establish working relationships. It is also an ideal time for students to get answers to questions about financial aid, course selection, housing and so on.

Students remain with the same counselor throughout their stay at Stony Brook, unless personnel changes dictate otherwise. Each semester students schedule individual appointments with their counselor during four mandatory counseling periods. These meetings provide an opportunity for intensive academic advising and career counseling, financial aid monitoring, and personal interaction. Most students seek out their counselor between mandatory meetings to solve problems as they arise.
