Internship Reflection

Photo of Ben Ryan at Madison Square GardenWorking as an intern at Madison Square Garden Sports has been one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences of my life. As a member of the GardenVision team, I have had the unique opportunity to help present live games for both the New York Knicks and the New York Rangers. It's still surreal to think about how much I've been able to contribute to live events at one of the most iconic venues in the world. Being part of the team responsible for what fans see on the video boards during games has given me a front-row view of how high-level sports entertainment is produced.

One of the most satisfying projects I have worked on is creating player feature videos for the Knicks, which are shown during quarters and halftimes. Seeing something I edited played live in front of thousands of fans is an incredible feeling that never gets old. Another major highlight was helping put together a tribute video for Sam Rosen’s retirement night. I was responsible for researching his career, digging through old footage, and even gathering messages from Rangers players. Seeing the final product on the big screens during such a historic night was unforgettable, and it made me realize how powerful storytelling is in sports media.

Beyond game nights, I've worked on pulling archival footage for social media use and for alumni visits, when former players are honored at games. I also created stringouts of game footage, which are used internally and for network purposes. Through these projects, I learned how important it is for media workflows to be organized, efficient, and accurate. This part of the job really sharpened my skills not just in editing, but also in asset management and teamwork.

The second half of my internship has been just as exciting, if not more. One of my biggest projects was creating the Knicks Playoff Tip Off video, which plays right before tip-off during the playoffs. Updating video content to match the energy of the Detroit playoff series and working on games with so much on the line brought an entirely new level of intensity and pride to the work. I also had the chance to shoot video for Westchester Knicks games, giving me even more hands-on experience with camera work and live production.

One of the projects I’m particularly proud of was creating an EDM hype video using music by Dom Dolla. It’s played before warmups to get the crowd energized, and seeing the reaction from fans made all the hard work worth it. Projects like these have helped me grow my understanding of pacing, emotion, and rhythm when editing short-form content designed to hype up a live audience.

Throughout the internship, no two days have been exactly alike. One day I could be pulling last minute player highlights; the next, I might be working on a video for a social media campaign or preparing new video board content for a playoff series. This fast-paced environment has taught me to be adaptable, proactive, and always ready to take on a new challenge.

Overall, this experience has confirmed my passion for sports communications. I have become more confident in my skills as a video editor, storyteller, and member of a live production team. Working at Madison Square Garden has shown me the importance of combining creativity with technical skill to create unforgettable moments for fans. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to intern at MSG Sports, and I am more certain than ever that this is the field I want to pursue as I move forward in my career.
