Welcome First Generation Students

WHAT IS FIRST GEN?

A formal definition of a first-generation student is one for whom all parents, stepparents, or guardians have educational attainment below the associate-degree level. A student is classified as not first-generation if any parent, stepparent, or guardian has earned a college degree at the associate-degree level or higher, including credentials such as “graduated from trade school or community college.” When no educational data is available for any parent, stepparent, or guardian, the student’s first-generation status is recorded as unknown.

At Stony Brook, we open our First Generation awareness programming to all students and supporters who shape the path forward for their family unit. First-generation Seawolves bring diverse perspectives and experiences to campus. However, they may face unique challenges because family members haven’t been through the college experience themselves. This is why SBU provides extra mentorship and support to help these students succeed and pave the way for future generations!
