- Register for next semester's classes as soon as your enrollment appointment begins, but no later than one week after.
- The next semester class schedule is now available on SOLAR.
- The current Undergraduate Bulletin includes majors, minors, course descriptions, and prerequisites.
- To be enrollment as a full time student a minimum of 12 credits are need. The credit limit for advanced registration is 17 credits until the credit limit increases to 19.
How to find your enrollment appointment:
- If you are a New York State (NYS) resident seeking TAP, review your TAP Summary page on SOLAR to verify that you have met all criteria. You must be enrolled as a full-time student taking 12 or more credits applicable toward the degree program per semester to receive TAP or NYS Scholarships. Credit-bearing courses in your minimum full-time course load (12 semester hours or the equivalent) must consist of courses applicable to your program of study as a general education requirement, major requirement, or elective (if applicable). Credits that are being used for a minor and/or specialization on record may NOT be counted as part of your 12 degree applicable credits UNLESS the minor and/or specialization is required for your major.
- Check SOLAR to make sure you don't have any holds that will prevent you from registering on time, including any balance due on your account. To register for classes, you must have a zero balance due. Resolve any financial issues quickly so that you do not miss out on key classes needed to make academic progress.
Holds can be found in the top left corner of the SOLAR Home Page. Review your degree progress on Degree Works to verify what requirements you have met, what are in progress, and what still needs to be completed. See more details and the tutorial at the bottom of this page.
You must complete the following to earn your Stony Brook undergraduate degree:- Your major (and minor, specialization, or concentration if required by your major)

- If you are following the pre-med track you will need to take CHE 132 and 134 or CHE 331 and 383; and BIO 201 or 202. Review the pre-med pre-requisites.
- First-Year Seminar 102 courses offer first- year students the opportunity to work with experienced faculty who are passionate and knowledgeable about the seminar topic. 102 seminars are introductory in the sense that little prior background is expected, yet they are real inquiries into the methods, components, and substance of a particular subject. In addition to developing meaningful bonds with faculty and peers, 102 seminars provide an intellectually exciting way of transitioning to the university.
The 102 offerings by UGC page shows the topic for each unique 102 course. Students will need to note the section number after selecting their topic and enroll in the corresponding section on SOLAR. Make a note of the different meeting patterns for 102 courses, some are 10 weeks and some 14 weeks.
Ask your 101 class Fellow about their 102 experience! Search in SOLAR or Schedule Builder for a major-related course. Watch the Schedule Builder video tutorials.
In SOLAR Select Records & Registration, then Enrollment, then Class Search. Enter the 3-letter department code in "Subject" such as BIO or MAT, enter the 3-digit course number in "Course Number" such as 201 or 125, then Search.
Search in SOLAR for an unfulfilled SBC requirement: In SOLAR Select Records & Registration, then Enrollment, then Class Search. Under the "Class Attributes/Requirements" section select Stony Brook Curriculum from the second drop down menu "Course Attribute" then the specific SBC area such as ARTS from "Course Attribute Value". Entering the SBC Area into the Subject box will not yield results.
In SOLAR, if the class you are trying to register for is full and has a waitlist, click on the box "Waitlist if class is full" to be added to the waitlist:
After clicking "Next", you will see your waitlist position:
PLEASE NOTE:
- Check SOLAR often. You will receive a SOLAR message if/when you are added to the class (or if there was a problem, like a time conflict).
- SOLAR will check for prerequisites right after you click on the waitlist checkbox and click "Next". However, other things like time conflicts, reserved sections, and other issues will only be checked when you are about to be added to the class.
- If there is no waitlist checkbox that means that the class does not offer a waitlist.
- Check out the Registrar's Academic Calendar for dates on the last day to waitlist yourself and other important deadlines.
- You can also use the waitlist option when you are swapping a class.

- If you wish to enroll in CHE 129, 131, or 152 this fall, you must FIRST complete the math placement exam AND the Online Chemistry Preparation & Placement Process (OCPP) initial assessment and the appropriate objectives. It takes an average of 10 hours to complete the OCPP process, so please plan ahead. To be guaranteed a seat, you must complete OCPP by the date above. OCPP scores are uploaded every few days, which you can see on your Stony Brook transcript on SOLAR.
An OCPP score of 3 and a math placement exam score of 3 allows you to register for CHE 129/130 and MAT 123. An OCPP score of 3 and a math placement exam score of 4 or higher allows you to register for CHE 131 and MAT 125 (or higher). An OCPP score of 4 allows you to register for CHE 152 and the appropriate math course based upon the math placement exam.
Old OCPP scores from prior semesters are valid for enrollment.
OCPP will remain open until the deadline. However, if you do not register by the deadline, all remaining CHE 129 and 131 seats will be reserved for new students until the credit limit increases. If there are any remaining CHE 129 and 131 seats, they will be made available to all continuing students starting the day of the credit limit increase.
CHE 129 and CHE 152 are offered only in the fall semester. CHE 131 is offered in the fall, spring, and summer semesters.
More details, including the access code that you need to login to OCPP. - If you wish to retake a course (second attempt) this summer, you may do so during the summer enrollment period. If you wish to retake a course (second attempt) this fall, you may do so starting Tuesday, August 15 at 9 a.m., after all first time takers have had an opportunity to register AND pending an available seat.
Some classes are designated as "high demand" or "HDCA" courses. This means that it's unlikely there will be available seats in these particular classes for the upcoming semester and there is no guarantee of a seat for any course. If no seats are available when you attempt to register, you can add yourself to the course waitlist (if one exists). You may want to retake classes in summer and winter, when there are often more seats available.
If you wish to retake a course for a third or more time, please obtain a petition from your academic advisor and a letter of support from the academic department offering the course.
You are not permitted to select the grade/pass/no credit (G/P/NC) option for course retakes.
If you retake a course in which you earned a P, S, or D or better on the first attempt, you cannot earn credit a second time. Course retake grades appear on the transcript, along with the grade on the first attempt, and all attempts are factored into your cumulative GPA.
For more information, visit www.stonybrook.edu/retake. We accept a maximum of 9 credits in each of the two 6-week summer sessions, whether these credits are taken at Stony Brook University or transferred from another approved institution. Transfer credits, pending approval, may be applied toward major, minor, and/or general education requirements. Transfer courses are not included in the Stony Brook GPA and require a grade or C or better.
To obtain Stony Brook credit for a summer course at another college or university within the United States, check the transfer database at to see if the course you wish to take has already been approved and evaluated. If the course is not on this list, please consult with an academic advisor in Academic & Transfer Advising Services, E-2360 Melville Library and complete a Transfer Credit Evaluation form PRIOR to enrolling in the course.
If you are seeking to study abroad, Stony Brook offers several unique opportunities each summer. Visit www.stonybrook.edu/studyabroad for details and application deadlines.
To obtain Stony Brook credit for a summer course at a college or university outside of the United States, Stony Brook students are required to participate in an approved partner university program offered through International Academic Programs (IAP) in the Office of Global Affairs. All other international credits obtained in the summer will NOT be eligible as transfer credit applied to your Stony Brook degree program. New York State residents participating in an IAP approved international summer program pay the in-state tuition rate for coursework; all other students participating in an IAP approved international summer program pay the out-of-state tuition rate for coursework. Scholarships ranging from $500-$3000 are available for IAP summer participants (eligibility based on merit and cost of program.) Visit www.stonybrook.edu/studyabroad for details on IAP approved summer programs, costs, and scholarships.- If you are considering withdrawing from the semester for any reason, please speak with your academic advisor.
After the ninth week of classes for fall and spring semesters, a student who wishes to withdraw from a course may do so only by withdrawing from all courses in that semester or by withdrawing from the University. Such withdrawal requests must be requested by the last day of classes.
Students officially withdraw from a course by dropping it via the SOLAR System or in person at the Registrar's Office. Students withdrawing from all their courses (or withdrawing from the University) may do so in writing or in person at the Registrar's Office. Students who withdraw from the University and whose cumulative grade point average is less than 2.00 are required to wait for at least one semester before they are permitted to re-enroll. To learn more about taking a leave of absence, please refer to the "Leave of Absence and Returning to the University" section in this Bulletin. - We are currently accepting applications for Undergraduate College Fellows! The Fellows program provides first-year students with an opportunity to serve as peer mentors in their sophomore year. Fellows participate in welcoming the next class of first-year students at Orientation, Opening, and as teaching assistants in UGC 101. This is a calendar year commitment with UGC 275 and UGC 276 enrollment by department permission. Ask your current UGC 101 Fellow about their experience!
