ABOUT

The Undergraduate College of Social Justice, Equity, and Ethics (SJE) empowers students from all disciplines to explore the pursuit of diversity and inclusion, while creating a language of equal human rights for the 21st century. The college will seek solutions to widening disparities in health, education, and society based on identities including, but not limited to, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, ability, gender, and sexual orientation. Students in this college will analyze social justice and equity related challenges, both domestically and internationally, in historical and contemporary contexts.

Possible topics of discussion may include, but are not limited to:

  • Social Justice Movements
  • Access to Healthcare for All
  • Environmental Racism, Waste, and Justice
  • Managing the Education Gap
  • The Ethics of Complacency
  • Media, Integrity, and Responsibility
  • Identity, Inclusion, and Community
  • Globalization and Human Equity

First-Year Seminars

SBU First-Year Seminars

The First-Year Seminar 101 is a 1-credit course that supports first-year students in their transition to University life - academically, personally, and socially. The course aims to foster a sense of belonging; promote curricular and co-curricular engagement; help students clarify their plan and purpose; and involve students in a dialogue on social responsibility and inclusion.

Mendelsohn Community

Each Undergraduate College is housed in a specific residential area called a community, which includes a dedicated Center for seminars, programs, and activities. SJE is part of the Mendelsohn Community.

Mendelsohn Center

The Mendelsohn Center, located in Gray Hall, serves as the home base for SJE programs, social gatherings, and SJE related meetings all year round. *Please note that the center will not be open for the Fall 2022 semester.*
