Sheri R. Levy has been a professor of psychology at Stony Brook University (SBU) since
1999 and has held administrative leadership positions including chair of the Department
of Psychology, director of Graduate Studies, and director of Undergraduate Studies.
She has served on numerous committees including the Promotion and Tenure Committee
in CAS, Arts and Sciences Senate, and University Senate.
Since 2021, Sheri has been a representative to the United Nations (UN) for the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI; Division 9, American Psychological Association, APA) and to the Psychology Coalition of NGOs accredited at the United Nations (PCUN). She is also currently president-elect of the Society for Environmental, Population, and Conservation Psychology (Division 34, APA) and main editor of the PCUN Paper Series.
Sheri holds a PhD in Psychology from Columbia University and a BA in Psychology and a BFA from the University of Michigan. She is a social and developmental psychologist who conducts basic research and theory-driven interventions with children, adolescents, and adults. With interdisciplinary and international collaborators, she studies the interrelated topics of ageism, aging, climate anxiety, climate change education, human rights, intergenerational relations, and poverty. She conducts lifespan research in several countries and uses a multi-method approach including archival data, curriculum evaluation, experiments, fieldwork, interventions, longitudinal studies, meta-analyses, and surveys. Sheri s research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and other agencies, and she has edited special issues of journals and several books. She is a Fellow of several psychological societies and has received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service, SBU CELT Teaching Award, Distinguished Service Award (SPSSI), Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring Award (SPSSI); and Social Issues Dissertation of the Year Award (SPSSI).
Across roles at SBU and other organizations, Sheri has been involved in collaborative visioning, goal setting, and decision making along strategic planning initiatives, budget management and resource allocation, and program development and assessment.
