CORE Advising

The CORE (Conditional Reinstatement) Advising program is a dynamic partnership between Seawolves in the conditional reinstatement process and a dedicated academic success advisor. Through student-centered collaboration, this program provides individualized success plans for resilient Seawolves to achieve their reimagined academic goals. We understand that the pathway to academic success is not always a straight line and that challenges are a necessary part of everyone's journey.

This program is for students who are in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) or School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SOMAS) and not in EOP/AIM .

As students go through the CORE advising process, we encourage them to keep the 4 keys of CORE success in mind:

Communicate: Your assigned CORE advisor will send frequent reminders and communications of dates, deadlines, opportunities, and resources at Stony Brook. It is imperative that students check their SBU emails frequently (at least once a day is suggested as the best practice) and read all CORE communications.
Orient: Within the CORE program, we encourage students to orient themselves toward their academic goals, trying to indicate a clear sense of purpose and direction. For many students, this may require them to adjust their academic goals and expectations.
Reflect: Reflection is an important step in growing and developing as a lifelong learner. Each of our CORE students has experienced and overcome unique challenges. We encourage CORE students to reflect on the current and past factors that contributed to their academic standing.
Engage: Engaging in the CORE program and the wide range of opportunities/resources Stony Brook has available will assist you in your academic journey! Being engaged requires students to be physically and mentally present during classes, study time, advising meetings, and campus events.

Students participating in CORE Advising will:

  • Create an individual action plan for student success.
  • Connect regularly with a dedicated academic success advisor for support, academic planning and strategies.
  • Engage with student services and resources, such as tutoring and counseling.

Grad Day

"Coming to college hit me like a ton of bricks. I’d done well in high school but I just wasn’t prepared for the way college works, how much reading some professors assign, or the fancy language some people use. When I ended up on first semester warning, I felt like a failure, like I didn’t belong. After a while, I realized that first semester warning didn’t define me as a person or limit my potential as a student. Yes, I struggled, but it wasn’t that I couldn’t do the work. I needed to learn how to do college. It took some time, but I made an effort to take advantage of as many resources as I could: I met with my advisor, used tutoring services, and started spending more time at the library. Now, I’m on track to graduate and I know that I deserve to be here just as much as anyone else."
